I want to add that the definition may be different for different friends. I once had a friend tell me that I was not a good friend because she expected her friends to go shopping, go to the movies and various other activites. These are two things I absolutely hate. I thought about this for a long time if I was a bad friend. Then I thought that we have different friends for different reason and we should not expect each friend to satisfy all our needs.

I have my friends I exercise with. I have my friends I scrapbook with. I have my friends I travel with. I have my friends that involve activities with our children or my husband and so on. I don’t expect my scrapbooking friends to go on a 30 mile bike ride or my scrapbooking friends to hang out with me and my son at the zoo. I cherish each friend for the reason we are friends.

If you're a true friend, maintenance is a forgone conclusion. Building friendship, i.e. giving effortlessly more and more is more difficult.
You need to keep reaching in yourself to keep giving. Giving is an
endless beginning.
